Most households replace blinds every 10 to 15 years, but that number hides more than it reveals. The better question is not how old they are. It is whether they still do the job you need, and whether what is wrong can be fixed.
Signals that mean replace
- Yellowed or chalky vinyl. This is UV degradation of the material itself. It cannot be cleaned off and it cannot be reversed.
- Faded fabric, especially in a band. A shade that sat half-raised for years often shows a distinct line where the exposed section faded and the protected section did not.
- Bowed or warped wood louvers. A bowed slat never closes flat again.
- Multiple mechanisms failing at once. One broken tilt is a repair; a broken tilt plus a slipping lift plus frayed cords means the blind is done.
- Visible light gaps from a poor fit. Common with stock blinds cut down at a store counter. No amount of repair fixes the wrong size.
Signals that mean repair
If the slats and finish are sound and exactly one thing has failed, repair is almost always the better economics. Lift cords, tilt gears, ladders and individual slats are all replaceable.
This matters most on custom-sized windows, where replacement means a new made-to-measure blind. A restring on a large custom blind costs a small fraction of remaking it.
Signals that mean you just need to clean them
A surprising share of the blinds people are ready to replace simply need a proper clean. Dust bonded with kitchen grease dulls a finish and makes slats look permanently discoloured. Cellular shade cells full of fine dust look grey rather than white.

Reasons to replace that have nothing to do with condition
Safety. If you have corded blinds and there are now children or pets in the house, replace them. Cordless is the industry standard for good reason, and it is the one case where replacing perfectly functional blinds is clearly right.
The room's job changed. A guest room that became a nursery needs blackout. A spare room that became a home office needs glare control. The old blinds may be fine and still wrong.
Energy performance. If a room has always been cold, swapping blinds for cellular honeycomb shades addresses it directly. Nothing else insulates as well, which matters at Colorado Springs elevations.
Selling the house. Dated or mismatched window coverings read as deferred maintenance in photographs. It is one of the cheaper cosmetic improvements before a listing.
Common questions
- Do blinds increase home value?
- Blinds and shades are generally treated as furnishings rather than fixtures, so their direct effect on appraised value is limited. Shutters are the exception. They are fitted into the opening and convey with the house, and buyers consistently notice them.
- Should I replace all my blinds at once?
- Not necessarily, though matching becomes difficult across years as finishes and product lines change. If consistency across a facade matters, which it does under most HOA covenants, do the street-facing windows together at minimum.
- How do I know if my blinds are still under warranty?
- Most quality custom blinds carry a limited lifetime warranty on mechanisms, often transferable to a new owner. If we supplied them we have the record; if someone else did, the headrail usually carries a manufacturer label.
