What mini blinds are good at
One-inch slats close more tightly than any wider blind, because there are more of them and each overlaps its neighbour more. That gives excellent privacy and, with a routeless or minimal-hole design, very little light leak.
They also stack smaller than anything else. A raised mini blind disappears into a bundle a couple of inches deep, which preserves the glass on short windows: basement hoppers, transoms, half-height bathroom windows, the small high windows common in Colorado Springs laundry rooms.
And they are inexpensive. If you are covering a dozen secondary windows in a rental property, a basement, or a house you are preparing to sell, mini blinds do the job for a fraction of what any other custom treatment costs.
Custom versus the box store version
Mini blinds have a poor reputation, and it comes almost entirely from stock blinds cut down at a hardware store counter. The differences are worth understanding, because they are the difference between a product that looks cheap and one that simply is inexpensive.
- Fit. A stock blind is cut to the nearest available size and trimmed. A custom blind is manufactured to your measured opening, so the gaps at the sides are minimal and consistent.
- Slat gauge. Box store blinds use the thinnest alloy that will hold a shape. A custom mini blind uses a heavier gauge that resists creasing.
- Headrail. Steel rather than thin aluminum, with a tilt mechanism that does not bind.
- Bottom rail. Properly weighted, so the blind hangs straight and does not rattle.
- Cordless. Every blind we sell is cordless as standard. Many stock blinds still are not.
The price difference is real but smaller than most people assume, and the lifespan difference is not small at all.
Colour and finish
Aluminum takes finish well, so this is a surprisingly broad category. Standard whites and alabasters cover most needs and satisfy HOA covenants about what your windows look like from the street. Beyond that there are greys, blacks, bronzes, true metallics and a range of saturated colours.
A matte black mini blind in a modern office or a black-framed window looks deliberate and sharp. A bronze or pewter finish coordinates with fixtures in a way white never does. Because the product is inexpensive, this is a low-risk place to make an interesting choice.
One practical note: darker colours absorb more solar heat than light ones. On a south or west window, a white or light metallic slat performs better against heat gain than a black one, however good the black looks.
Where to spend more instead
We would rather be honest about where mini blinds are the wrong choice.
In a primary living space (a great room, a formal dining room, a main bedroom) a one-inch aluminum slat reads as functional and will make an otherwise finished room feel unfinished. Step up to two-inch aluminum, faux wood or a shade.
On a window with a view, the number of horizontal lines across the glass is highest with one-inch slats. A wider slat or a solar screen preserves far more of what you are looking at.
In a cold room, mini blinds provide effectively no insulation, metal conducts heat. A honeycomb shade is the answer there.
A sensible strategy in a whole-home project is mini blinds in the utility spaces and the budget redirected to better treatments in the rooms you actually spend time in. We will happily build a quote that way.

- Stock blinds cut down at a store counter often are: poor fit, thin slats, visible trimming. A custom mini blind manufactured to your opening in a proper gauge with a steel headrail looks tidy and intentional. The material is inexpensive; the execution does not have to be.
- How long do mini blinds last?
- In a low-traffic window, a decade or more, the aluminum itself does not degrade. The realistic failure is a bent slat from a pet, a child or a slamming window, and how soon that happens depends mostly on slat gauge and location. Individual slats can be replaced.
- Do mini blinds come cordless?
- Yes, and every blind we sell is cordless as standard. There is no cord loop and nothing hanging within reach, which is the right choice in any home with children or pets and is now the industry norm.
- Can mini blinds be used in a bathroom?
- They are one of the best bathroom options: aluminum is completely unaffected by steam, and they can be wiped down or even taken outside and washed. The small stack is also useful on the short, high windows common in bathrooms.
- How do I clean mini blinds?
