Roller shades are good at one half of the energy question and mediocre at the other. Understanding which half matters for your window is the difference between a treatment that pays for itself and one that just looks nice.
Summer: genuinely effective
Solar heat gain is the dominant energy issue in Colorado Springs, and roller shades address it well. A light-coloured roller on a west-facing window reflects a large share of incoming solar energy before it becomes heat in the room.
This matters more here than in most places. Colorado Springs gets more than 300 sunny days a year, and a great deal of local construction points large windows west toward the mountains. A west-facing wall of glass on an August afternoon is a substantial cooling load, and a shade closed ahead of it does real work.
The word 'ahead' is doing a lot there. A shade closed after the room is already hot is managing a problem that has happened. This is the strongest practical argument for motorization, a shade on a schedule or a sun sensor closes at the right time every day whether or not anyone is home.
Winter: not their strength
For heat retention, a single layer of fabric hanging near the glass does relatively little. There is no trapped air, which is the mechanism that actually resists conduction.
This is where cellular honeycomb shades substantially outperform them. The hexagonal cells hold still air against the glass, and a double or triple-cell shade in a snug fit measurably slows heat loss on a cold night.
If your problem is a room that is cold in January, a roller shade is not the answer regardless of fabric.
What improves a roller shade's performance
- Light-coloured, reflective fabric on the glass side. Some fabrics are made with a reflective backing specifically for this.
- Side channels, which close the convection path down the edges of the shade and improve both summer and winter performance noticeably.
- A snug inside mount with minimal gaps, for the same reason.
- A cassette headrail, which closes the gap at the top where warm air otherwise escapes.
- Automation, so the shade is actually in the right position at the right time.
Side channels are the most underrated of these. They cost relatively little and they convert a roller shade from a sun-blocker into something that also slows air movement at the window.
Protecting your interiors
Separate from heating and cooling, there is a real financial case that gets overlooked. Even a light-filtering roller blocks the large majority of ultraviolet light.
At 6,035 feet, UV intensity is roughly a quarter higher than at sea level, and it fades hardwood floors, rugs, artwork and leather furniture faster than most people expect. A shade on the offending window is considerably cheaper than refinishing a floor.
